Okay starting off strong. I forgot to do a couple of updates since the first one earlier in March, but I kind of have a good reason. I got married! So that took up a lot of time in march and I didn’t get out too often. But, the wedding planning is over and the weather is warming up, so I am ready to get out and take some photos!
Starting the week off I sent in five rolls of film to be developed, they are all Ektachrome E100 and I already can’t wait for the scans to come back. Some of those rolls are close to two years old, so it’s anyone's guess about what's on there. One of the more recent rolls I had shot for a project I started back in the fall, all about shooting during blue hour. I had chosen to shoot Ektachrome for it because I know the tones tend to lean towards blue without a filter.
Continuing with Ektachrome, on friday I bought a roll from a local store because my wife and I were meeting up with some friends at the Virginia Museum of Fine Art (VMFA), and it was such a beautiful day out I just wanted to shoot something. The light was perfect and I feel like I got some good shots. I’m going to be sending this roll in probably next week because I just need to see those shots! The next day I also did some testing with some filters, so I’m excited to see the results.
Saturday morning I decided to go out and take some sunrise shots at T. Pott bridge in downtown Richmond. I needed to get out to shoot, and it was an easy location. It was such an amazing morning, the light and sky were going off, and the weather was perfect. Although, when I first arrived I was worried that it would be a dull sunrise because there was a lot of cloud cover out east, and nothing above Richmond. I still got myself set up, and grabbed a nice blue hour shot of the city all lit up with the sun beginning to shine some light on the clouds out east. The sun continued to rise and I snapped a few more shots from the bridge, then turned and went to the flood wall. Here I set myself up on the rocks and only got a couple of shots in before the battery in my camera died. It was fine though because I still had to finish off a roll of Ektachrome on my tiny Minolta Hi-Matic E film camera!
When I bought my little Minolta, the seller also included a plethora of filters, which I really hadn’t touched. I did know that a few of them were daylight filters (Skylight 1A’s, and an 812), so I brought them with me to see which one worked the best. I had the camera all set up on the tripod and got started. There were 5 filters I wanted to test out, well 7 but I’ll get to that, and they were all different thread sizes so I had all my step up rings as well. I had 3 Skylight 1A filters, one 812, and then a random ND4. I also had two CPL’s with me, but I was using a rangefinder for this and so I couldn’t actually see when the polarizer was in the right position. Also, the threads were too small to try it out on my digital since I only had the wide lens and those threads I think are ~77mm. All in all, I think everything went well and I’m excited to see the results. I’ll probably be sending this roll in next week, so we’ll see soon!
Other than that, it was a pretty calm week. I have a few ideas running around in my head for some shots I want to get, that I’ll probably go for next week, so stay tuned for that!
